‘A wide-ranging and engaging guide not only to our blind spots, but to our blind spots about our blind spots. Delightful!’
Tim Harford (Presenter and Author of How to Make the World Add Up)
TICKETS £10 (plus booking fee)
We all like to think we’re making decisions based on reality, but in fact, we’re almost always working from incomplete information. And when ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’, it can be impossible to navigate successfully.
Join mathematician, Kit Yates, as he delves into the themes of his new book, You Don’t Know What You’re Missing, about something that lies hidden in the background of almost everything we do, yet rarely gets named - Missingness. Those hidden gaps that shape how we think, decide, argue, and even how we determine what counts as true.
Kit explores the blind spots, gaps in our knowledge and how we make sense of the world given we usually have an unfinished picture. From avoiding common traps and pitfalls to filling in the gaps without guessing, it shows us how to turn our misses into hits.
KIT YATES
Kit is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and co-director of the Centre for Mathematical Biology at the University of Bath.
His research demonstrates that mathematics can be used to describe all sorts of real-world phenomena and he is particularly interested in the role that randomness plays in biology. His research into mathematical biology has been covered by the BBC, the Guardian, the Telegraph, and Scientific Americanamongst others.
A profound, intriguing, and important book that reveals as much about human nature as the remarkable power of the brain. Every insight comes to life through real-world examples of the potential and the pitfalls of the hidden patterns all around us. I loved it.”

“Super-smart and as readable as a great Whodunit. Such a brilliant concept. Such an original book. Kit is the King of Accessible Maths.”
– Jeremy Vine
Kit will be signing copies of his latest book, You Don’t Know What You’re Missing, which will be available to purchase on the night.
This event will take place upstairs in The Nightingale Room at The Grand Central Pub, Brighton. Unfortunately there is no wheelchair access available at this venue.
